DOWNTOWN DEVIL DISCUSSIONS RESUMES SEPT. 25, 2012

PHOENIX (Sept. 16, 2012) – With school back in session, the Downtown Devil is bringing back another year of Downtown Devil Discussions, along with some changes.

Downtown Devil Discussions will now be split into two sessions. The first will be similar to the panel discussions as the year before. Audience questions and social media will still be incorporated within the program. But, to better communication and forge relationships with all members of the downtown community, there will be a breakout session once the discussion is done.

“The goal for this semester’s Downtown Devil Discussions is to be less formal and more inclusive,” said Connor Descheemaker, Director of Community Initiatives. “With that, we want to create more spontaneous dialogue between audience members and panel members. The breakout session will allow people to make personal connections with the movers and shakers within the city.”

There will be food and drinks provided during the breakout session, with the main goal to have audience members and panelists mingle and share deeper conversations and opinions.

La Tolteca will be providing food and refreshments for this event.

This will also be the first sponsored Downtown Devil Discussions with thanks to Pedalcraft, Grand Avenue Rail Project and Downtown Voices Coalition (DVC).

“Community leaders offering sponsorship to our organization speaks to our overall goals as the number one news source in downtown Phoenix,” said Daniel Zayas, Communities Editor. “Our friends and businesses have taken a vested interest in Downtown Devil’s future success and we are excited to have them on board.”

The topic to kick off the first discussion of the year will focus on downtown’s urban transportation landscape. Panelists include: Hillary Foose, the Director of Communication and Marketing for Valley Metro, Mike Kuby, a professor at the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning and the director of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate Program in Transportation Systems at Arizona State University, Joseph Perez, the bicycle coordinator and traffic engineer II at the Phoenix Street Transportation Department, Nicole Underwood, a community activist and founder of SideWalk Phoenix, and Nick Gnat, a New York native and frequent commuter.

Downtown Devil Discussions will take place on Tuesday, September 25, at 7 p.m. in the First Amendment Forum at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, 555 N. Central Avenue.

DOWNTOWN DEVIL LAUNCHES NEW VERSION OF VANISHING PHOENIX BLOG

PHOENIX (March 16, 2012) – The Downtown Devil launched a new version of the Vanishing Phoenix blog earlier today. Downtown Devil’s Director of Community Initiatives and contributing reporter, Connor Descheemaker, will be managing the blog on a weekly basis, featuring posts on various historic buildings and their current uses, interviews with preservationists and architects, previews and reviews of building tours, other events and much more.

Vanishing Phoenix was a joint venture by Phoenix preservationists and planners, Yuri Artibise and Taz Loomans. The original blog was founded in 2010 with the goal to document the successes and failures in preservation in the Valley of the Sun. With the help of fellow Phoenix preservationists and historians, Jim McPherson and Marshall Shore, Vanishing Phoenix became the go-to source for news on Phoenix’s young history.

Similarly in 2010, Downtown Devil reporter and now managing editor, Jack Fitzpatrick, create the PHX History blog, which documented Phoenix landmarks through the eyes of an Arizona State University student. Each post featured a different Phoenix landmark that detailed its past, present and future, as well as highlighted its vitality and importance within the context of the city.

A couple weeks ago, the authors of Vanishing Phoenix came to the Downtown Devil with a proposition to take over the original blog and give it a new life under a Downtown Devil sub-site. The Downtown Devil decided to jump at this opportunity and create a new blog that combined both Vanishing Phoenix and PHX History blogs. The Downtown Devil will migrate all past content from both blogs onto the new Vanishing Phoenix blog, which will become a hub of information for all things related to Phoenix history.

“I have long been fascinated by Phoenix’s history and have been reading (the Vanishing Phoenix) blog since it started,” Descheemaker said. “I am thrilled to be able to contribute to the dialogue that goes on about Phoenix’s history!”

DOWNTOWN DEVIL TO PUBLISH 1000th STORY

PHOENIX (March 13, 2012) — The Downtown Devil will publish its thousandth story today after three years of covering the ASU Downtown campus and the surrounding downtown Phoenix community.

The story, an article on downtown student government releasing the names of candidates for next year, was written by journalism sophomore Connor Radnovich.

Radnovich said it is “a big honor” to have written the thousandth story since he joined the Downtown Devil staff just over a year ago, with his first story being published at the end of January 2011.

“For someone like me to come in and be accepted and contribute so much has been really great,” Radnovich said. ”The thousandth story just shows a small student-started publication in the dorm room can impact the community in just a few short years.”

Radnovich is an assistant news editor covering student government and primarily reports on the organization himself, and said that this story wasn’t monumental, but nonetheless important.

“It’s just another way the Downtown Devil reports its stories,” he said. “It takes more than just one big story to cover the community. It takes a bunch of small stories to capture it through excellent reporting over a long period of time.”

That community connection is what Radnovich says sets the Downtown Devil apart.

“It’s a lot more rooted in the community than a lot of other publications in the Phoenix area,” Radnovich said.

The number of comments on our website from community members demonstrates the reach the publication has had, he said.

“While the publication is run by students and is geared toward students, (community members) really do listen to what we have to say,” he said.

Downtown Devil has (covered the community) well, and will continue to do it well as it continues to grow.”

About Downtown Devil

The Downtown Devil is an award-winning news publication owned and operated solely by Arizona State University students. In just three short years, the Downtown Devil has won the 2011 SPJ Mark of Excellence Best of the West Award for Best Independent Online Publication in Region 11 (recognizing work published in 2010) and has been selected as a finalist for the same award in 2012 for its work in 2011.

The Downtown Devil published its first story on Feb. 5, 2009. Publishing its thousandth story marks an accomplishment for all involved with the news publication.

Jack Fitzpatrick, managing news editor, said of the achievement:

“Everyone at the Downtown Devil is proud to be able to say we’ve published 1,000 stories. It’s a good chance to look back at all the hard work our reporters, editors and photographers have put in over the years. But at the same time, it’s also an opportunity to think about what milestones we could hit in the future. Whenever I look at how many stories we’ve published or how many readers we reach, the growth we’ve had so far makes me wonder how much we could improve going forward.”

With a staff of nearly 100 reporters, editors and digital media producers, the Downtown Devil publishes content five days per week, with an average of six stories daily, including multimedia projects, restaurant reviews, profiles and extensive coverage of arts and cultural events that can be shared via social media.
