DOWNTOWN DEVIL LAUNCHES NEW VERSION OF VANISHING PHOENIX BLOG
PHOENIX (March 16, 2012) – The Downtown Devil launched a new version of the Vanishing Phoenix blog earlier today. Downtown Devil’s Director of Community Initiatives and contributing reporter, Connor Descheemaker, will be managing the blog on a weekly basis, featuring posts on various historic buildings and their current uses, interviews with preservationists and architects, previews and reviews of building tours, other events and much more.
Vanishing Phoenix was a joint venture by Phoenix preservationists and planners, Yuri Artibise and Taz Loomans. The original blog was founded in 2010 with the goal to document the successes and failures in preservation in the Valley of the Sun. With the help of fellow Phoenix preservationists and historians, Jim McPherson and Marshall Shore, Vanishing Phoenix became the go-to source for news on Phoenix’s young history.
Similarly in 2010, Downtown Devil reporter and now managing editor, Jack Fitzpatrick, create the PHX History blog, which documented Phoenix landmarks through the eyes of an Arizona State University student. Each post featured a different Phoenix landmark that detailed its past, present and future, as well as highlighted its vitality and importance within the context of the city.
A couple weeks ago, the authors of Vanishing Phoenix came to the Downtown Devil with a proposition to take over the original blog and give it a new life under a Downtown Devil sub-site. The Downtown Devil decided to jump at this opportunity and create a new blog that combined both Vanishing Phoenix and PHX History blogs. The Downtown Devil will migrate all past content from both blogs onto the new Vanishing Phoenix blog, which will become a hub of information for all things related to Phoenix history.
“I have long been fascinated by Phoenix’s history and have been reading (the Vanishing Phoenix) blog since it started,” Descheemaker said. “I am thrilled to be able to contribute to the dialogue that goes on about Phoenix’s history!”
